Compare New Plymouth Airport (NPL) Rental Car Prices

Mt Taranaki

When you arrive at New Plymouth Airport, you will be greeted by a variety of rental car companies vying for your business. While it may be tempting to simply choose the first option you see, taking the time to compare prices can save you a significant amount of money. By researching different rental car providers, you can ensure that you are getting the best possible deal and avoid overpaying for your rental.
The main city of the Taranaki region is situated on the coastline with Mount Taranaki as its backdrop. New Plymouth was one of the first areas in New Zealand to be settled in by the early European settlers and today holds many links to that period in the form of Museums and art galleries.

All rental car companies are represented at New Plymouth airport and your hire car can get you to the many secluded sandy beaches and nature reserves.

The botanic gardens are well worth a visit and having a coffee at a cafe near the sea side is a must.

Picking up your rental car

Where are the car rental desks located at New Plymouth Airport?

Major rental counters operate directly inside the main terminal building at New Plymouth Airport (NPL). Brands like Ezi Car Rental, Avis, Budget, and Hertz have dedicated service desks located right in the arrivals and baggage claim hall.

What driver's licence and payment rules apply at the collection counter?

You must present a valid, physical domestic driver's licence written in English, or an approved International Driving Permit. You also need a physical credit card issued in the main driver’s name to hold the security bond. Digital wallet payments on mobile phones are strictly unaccepted for security holds.

Where do I go to collect my vehicle after finalizing the paperwork?

Once you receive your keys and rental agreement, walk directly outside the terminal doors. The dedicated rental car park is located just a short, covered walk away from the building. Your provider will assign you a specific numbered bay where your vehicle is parked.

Dropping off your rental car

What is the standard return process during regular business hours?

Drive into the airport precinct via Airport Road and follow the clear road signs pointing to the dedicated Rental Car Returns area. Park the vehicle inside a clearly marked bay reserved for your specific rental provider, lock the doors, note down the final mileage and fuel levels, and return the keys to staff at the terminal counter.

How do I complete my vehicle return if I am flying after hours?

Park and lock the car in your provider's assigned airport rental bays exactly as you would during standard hours. Walk back into the terminal building and drop the keys into the secure, branded key drop slot or drop box built into your rental provider's service counter.

Where is the best place to refuel my vehicle close to the airport?

There are no petrol stations directly on the airport grounds. The closest options are the commercial service stations located along Devon Road (State Highway 3) in Bell Block, which is just a 5-minute drive from the airport. Ensure you top off the tank completely to avoid premium refueling fees.
