Picking up your rental car

Where are the car rental counters located at Kerikeri Airport?

The car rental desks are located directly inside the main terminal building at Kerikeri Airport (Bay of Islands Airport). Major suppliers like Avis, Budget, and Hertz operate service counters right in the arrivals area, making them easy to spot immediately after you collect your luggage.

What driver's licence and identification documents do I need to provide?

You must present a valid, physical domestic driver's licence written in English. If your licence is in another language, you must bring an approved International Driving Permit or an official English translation. You must also present a physical credit card in the primary driver's name to hold the security bond; digital wallets are not accepted.

Where is the vehicle parking lot located for collecting my rental car?

After completing your rental agreement and collecting your keys at the desk, walk directly outside the terminal doors. The dedicated rental car park is situated just steps away from the building. Your provider will assign you a specific numbered bay where your vehicle is parked.

Dropping off your rental car

What is the step-by-step process for returning the vehicle during normal hours?

Drive into the airport grounds via Wiroa Road and follow the signs directing you to the Rental Car Returns area. Park the vehicle inside a clearly marked bay reserved for your specific rental company, lock the doors, note down the final mileage and fuel level, and hand the keys back to staff at the terminal desk.

How do I return my rental car if the service desk is unattended?

Park and lock your vehicle in your provider's designated airport parking bays exactly as you would during standard hours. Walk into the terminal building and locate your provider's service counter, where you will find a secure, branded key drop box or drop slot to safely deposit the keys.

Where is the most convenient place to refuel the car before drop-off?

There are no petrol stations on the airport grounds, so you should refuel in Kerikeri township before heading down Wiroa Road. The closest options are the commercial service stations located along Kerikeri Road or State Highway 10. Ensure the tank is full to avoid premium refuelling surcharges.
